| Leventina Valley |
This enchanting valley, criss-crossed
by countless paths and trails, promises scenery of rare
natural beauty, characterised in summer by unspoilt nature
bursting with colours and scents and, in winter, by an
enchanting blue-white blanket. The Piora Valley, the Bedretto
Valley and the San Gotthard region are among the most
beautiful spots in the whole Alpine region.
Not merely beautiful, however: the valley, nestling in
the heart of the Alps, has always been a strategic gateway
between North and South, and as such boasts the world’s
greatest rail and road tunnels, past and future.
The valley has much to offer from a cultural point of
view, including the Casa Stanga ethnographic museum, La
Congiunta museum in Giornico, the museums at the San Gotthard
Pass and the Dazio Grande museum at Rodi-Fiesso.
Also, visitors to the valley can find some ancient churches,
including the Church of San Nicolao in Giornico, a magnificent
example of Lombard Romanesque architecture, and the Church
of San Siro in Mairengo with its precious frescoes.
Leventina therefore offers convenience, rapid communications
and the perfect setting for both sport and pleasure, be
it in summer or winter. There are numerous ski-lifts,
including the winter ski resorts of Airolo-Pesciüm
and Carì, while in fine weather visitors can enjoy
one of the world’s steepest funicular railways at
Ritom, or the cable cars at Tremorgio and Piana Selva.
As regards sport, Leventina boasts one of Switzerland’s
most renowned ice hockey clubs, HCAP, or Hockey Club Ambrì
Piotta, the team that in 1999 scooped the coveted title
of European champions.
